Mr. University Introduction Music Video
The video below was my intro for the Kappa Alpha Theta Mr. University male
beauty pageant. The videos purpose was to get a good reaction from the
audience and judges to make them laugh and see me interact with UC and
the women of Kappa Alpha Theta. In this video, I think I did a good job a portraying
a more fun side of myself. The basic goal here was to have fun with it
while also winning the video portion of the competition. The theme for
this year was Greek themed, so I decided to use a Hercules song and
remix it with my own voice and words. Please take a minute to watch the short 1 minute video before continuing.
When I initially got the requirements for my introduction video, the first thought I had was to produce a music video. I started by coming up with songs to remix and reword to make into my song. Immediately the movie Hercules popped into my head because it was one of my favorite Greek themed movies growing up. A lot of my writing is based on previous experiences because it is easily relatable and easy for me to create discourse about. Once I chose a specific song from the movie entitled "I Can Go the Distance", I started in with my rewording process for the song. This is easy for me because I have had multiple experiences re-creating song lyrics into funny snippets for different presentations and projects. This process is easy for me as a rhetor because I have a unique rhyming talent. I enjoy the process of writing and composing these various songs because it is a unique means of composition and because music is something a lot of people seem to enjoy and relate to. Composing a song is a lot easier than a typical essay assignment or speech because it tends to be more interesting, creative, and unique.
For the music video itself, I took this composed song and recorded it. Then it was a lot of fun as a rhetor to come up with and execute different ideas for scenes that would: 1) capture the words of the song into actions, and 2) make the audience laugh and enjoy my talents. I was able to go around campus and relate different lyrics such as "I can go the distance" to running on a treadmill. As a rhetor, I think I appeal well to audiences with these pieces because music and video are a really easy way to display my (at least I think) silly and relatable personality.
The one thing that is a little bit more difficult about a music video versus a typical essay is that the music video tends to be more visible and public. Most people will take 1 minute to watch a short, entertaining video. Most people will not take 10 minutes to pick up a 6 page paper and give it a read. This makes the video a lot more visible and it is a little bit more scary to compose because you risk losing more if it is not well received. Overall, I enjoy the process of composition of music videos more than essays because I see myself as more of a creative writer. I tend to enjoy these type of pieces more, and, therefore, tend to put in better overall work because I enjoy it.
