Comparison of the Two Essays
Overall, the two essays were both very interesting and a little difficult to write. A lot of previous composition for me was centered more around creativity and plain writing ability versus actually analyzing and thinking deeper about the rhetor, motivation, intended/unintended audience, etc. A couple things that helped separate the essays and make the Derek Jeter essay more of an easy essay are: 1) The Jeter essay came towards the end of the semester when the rhetorical analysis skills had been practiced a bit more and it was easier to dig deeper into each discourse. 2) The Jeter essay was more interesting for me personally as a rhetor. I tend to do better with things that I am interested in more so and can better understand the topic at hand. The Ferguson situation was very broad, and I personally did not have a huge tie with the situation because of many different factors. Overall, I will not be able to definitively say this class made me a better or worse writer until I apply these new lessons within my everyday life for an extended period. However, because of this class, I was able to step back and be a little more analytical of the hundreds of texts and discourses I encounter each day.
