Welcome To the Wonderful World of Michael Fitzgerald
About Me:
My name is Michael Fitzgerald. I am a Biomedical Engineering student, Cincinnatus Presidential Scholar, and honors student here at the University of Cincinnati. I am originally from Peoria, Illinois where I attended Peoria Notre Dame High School. When I am not studying, I enjoy getting involved on campus, spending time with my friends, going to sporting events, traveling, exploring new places, experiencing life, and sleeping.
One of my main ideals is family. I have two wonderful parents, two brothers, and one sister. I owe a lot of who I am today to them. They have helped me to grow and continue to show me love through all of my successes and failures. I hold them close to my heart at all times.
One of the main reasons I am here is to get a degree in biomedical engineering. This goes back to the whole family thing because I want to be able to provide for my future wife and children the way I have always been provided for. Along that journey towards a degree, I want to maintain honors with at least a 3.4 GPA, be considered a leader within any group I get involved in, leave my legacy here at UC, and create many memories that will carry me through to graduation.
Once my degree is obtained, I want to get married and start a family of my own. I hope to be the best father anyone could ask for, and I strive toward this in the little things that I do every day. I work to show everyone I encounter that I care. In my career field, I hope to be able to start a non for profit to bring medical devices to underdeveloped areas of the world and help them receive the care they need.
During my first year, I joined the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, got involved in student government, joined the Biomedical Engineering Society, enhanced my honors involvement by joining the Honors Retreat Leadership Team, continued my service to HOBY, and enjoyed countless other experiences that enhanced my growth and the world around me.
During my second year, I continued my previous involvements, participated in my first co-op semester with Cook Medical in Bloomington, Indiana, became a ROAR Tour Guide, became a University Honors Program Ambassador, participated in the honors seminar and study tour called "On the River: Exploring the Amazon", secured a summer co-op position with Medventure Technologies in Louisville, started an accountability organization called Accountabuddies, and continued to mold myself into the person I want to be.
During my third year here at UC, I truly immerse myself in on campus leadership. I was the New Member Educator for the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. I was able to have 100% new member retention for the first time in recent PIKE history, winning the overall new member education award for the university. I was able to also secure positions on two new executive boards with the Student Alumni Council (SAC) as the VP of External Relations and with ROAR Guides as the VP of Training. I look forward to the difference I can make at UC within those organizations during the coming year. I also completed my third co-op rotation with a different company during the Spring called Mammotome: Devicor Medical Inc. within their research and development group.
During my fourth year, my campus involvement and accomplishments came to a head. While continuing my position in the fall at Mammotome with the R&D group, I was able to successfully stay involved on campus and help plan a re-opening event for the new Nippert Stadium through my position with SAC. I was also able to participate in the Homecoming king and queen process and was, much to my surprise, crowned homecoming king of the university in front of 40,000 plus fans in Nippert. It was one of the coolest and most special experiences of my college career. In the spring, I returned to class and completed my toughest semester thus far academically while helping continue to grow SAC's external presence and train ROAR's new guide class. At the end of the semester, I was able to finish off all of the hard work with a trip to Italy through my Roman Experience class. Following the trip, I started my final co-op at Ethicon Endo Surgery in Cincinnati with their R&D engineering group. This co-op will go through the end of the summer semester, then I head back to campus for my 5th and final year.
I look forward to what the next year and beyond have in store for me. Enjoy the site, and I can't wait to share my next journey with you!
